- Natural Textures
Nature has always been a source of great inspiration for me. So, it is no surprise that I believe the inclusion of natural textures inside the home will be a trend that will rise in popularity and will be here to stay for the foreseeable future. Bringing in natural stone on an accent wall inside the home, using wood elements throughout your space, or incorporating fabrics that are made of natural fibers is a great way to bring depth into your design. Under the practice of Feng Shui , the five elements of earth, metal, water, wood, and fire— work together to create a balanced environment inside your home. Each natural element provides a different purpose and can greatly impact the harmony and energy of your space.
2. Wallpaper
The level of detail and texture that is now available in wallpaper is astounding. I have seen wallpaper that mimics stone and wood so well that you have to walk up and touch it to know the difference. Wallpaper is a great way to spice up a small space, or accent a wall that is difficult to design due to its shape and location. The use of wallpaper is also a great alternative to adding tile/stone to a wall in situations where this is not cost effective or you are on a time constraint.
- Functionality over formality
Over the years, I have noticed a major shift away from creating formal spaces that are not functional for everyday use. If doing a full renovation to open up a formal space to the rest of the home is not an option, then I suggest rethinking how you will furnish the space, to broaden its functionality. For instance, if you have a formal dining room consider selecting a table and a set of chairs that are comfortable and durable enough to be used as a daily work space or a meeting room. Stray away from making a formal space even more inaccessible by using delicate fabrics and furniture.
